This thread reminds me, whatever has become of Utopian? He always had well-informed input on this topic--and many others.

Yes, but, the drying is that the alcohol sucks the water out of cells and kills the bugs.
Thus it is not air drying ... it is reverse osmosis that sucks the water out.
As such it is not effective on viruses because they do not have cell walls.
Salt and sugar cure works by reverse osmosis...

Many surface cleaners are designed to cause the 'bugs' to release and then they
are washed away. Alcohol, peroxide, acetic acid (vinegar) fall in this class.
Stronger chemicals like bleach, lye, acid tear organic compounds apart and sanitize
differently. The strong stuff must always be rinsed away and the steel protected with
    oil etc...

In commercial products like Barbicide are a mix of surfactants to wet the surface
will then releasing agents then other very interesting chemicals that attack organics.

Bacteria, fungus, viruses... all good reasons to not share kit even inside a home.

to the comment about 500*f for 30 minutes.. that, i think, will begin to affect the temper of the blade, and should be avoided.
an autoclave would be preferred.. failing that, a pressure cooker?
