Thread: Cattaraugus Green Lizard Straight Razor

Before you buy make sure that active rust is not caused by the breakdown of the celluloid. If you do not know what that is just search the forum for "cell rot".

This is may absolute favorite razor. I have been trying to put together a mint 7 day set for some time..Mr. Glen still will not come off of his =) Awesome find!

Very cool, M1ke! Well today I picked up the razor, as well as a Norton stone that the seller had. I was just hoping to avoid some of the "razor burn" associated with lack of knowledge and experience. I think I did "okay" on the razor and I'll learn about the stone!! Picked up some oil for the stone,new razors, and 0000 steel wool to start knocking off some of the red active rust. Oh yeah, the tail appears to be stamped "131D". Curious about what it could mean! I'll post some better pictures later once she's cleaned up a bit.

My mistake, just searched the forum and figured out the "131D" is a designator for one of the last Green lizard models.

While I understand your excitement, I would give you counsel to ‘Slow Down’!

Cleaning up your new found ‘prize’ may give you much personal satisfaction, however trying to learn to shave with a straight while learning to/restore and hone a straight isn’t a road you want to go down!!

Please take things one step at a time!!

Learn the art of shaving with a straight First!!

While doing so, go ahead and learn how to ‘clean up’ a razor you’ve found!

But Please until you at least semi master the art of shaving with a straight, please don’t even consider trying to hone one! (Just ask pinklather)

I also agree with Oz in that I do hope that the Norton wasn’t a ‘Water stone’! Because by adding oil to it will ruin it!!

Appreciate it, cudarunner! That's very kind and generous. The Norton stone is copyrighted 1953 and the instructions on the box call for oil. I'll freely admit I bought it on impulse, as I don't know what kind of grit this stone would be, or much about stones at all. Ha, you guys are probably all freakin' out right now at my ignorance! I've been shaving with a straight for three months now and have got that under control, and have spent most of my time on SRP stalking the shaving threads before actually joining and posting. Aaaaaaanyway - I cleaned up the razor a bit tonite - pictures as follows:

I must admit, my photography skills will need some work as well! The razor does look better in person. Now I just gotta get some polish to get rid of the stains left on the blade. I think she'll be a decent shaver afterall!

Looks more like rust than stains but fingers X'd for ya.
