    Default GD repair thread

I finally got the GD razor finished and shaving, and I have to say it was a job to get it to shave. I worked and worked on it to set the bevel and what a job. I certainly do not recomend these for anyone new. I have used it every morning now for a week and it is a really good shaver. I put it on the belt grinder to finally get it to shave though. Tricky business that.! Then it took a lot of work after that of course to clean it up and get it shave ready. Name: New GD.jpg

I like the jeweling. I wonder why it was so hart to set the bevel on yours. I've done a few of them, and while it took a little while on my 1000 grit, it wasn't any harder than anything I had bread knifed.

I don't know but I am working on another and it seems to be just as bad.

To stop this from going OT on the Quality of GD razors,

This train of thought is exactly why most of these threads get sidetracked and closed,, The single biggest problem with these razors is that they are "Inconsistant" some OK, some with minor problems, some terrible.. this causes the back and forth "debates" about quality which is why we close the threads..
If we can just keep this On Topic of how to fix the problems, this will be another infomative SRP thread on Restoration...

    Thank you

I thought the heat treat was pretty uniform. If the OP was able to hone the razor with finer stones but needed a belt grinder to set a bevel, I'm just suggesting that the razor and inconsistency might not be the issue, but rather time on the lower grits. But it's certainly possible that the razor was unevenly hard.

I think it is usually more of a Geometry issue than a hardness issue, perhaps Mack can explain what he had to do with the grinder ???

Well it is hard to explain but . All the stone work did not help so being a 30 year veteran of both razors and knife making, I simply went to what I know and that was to figure out what the problem was and then put on a fine belt and VERY carefully grind the razor into line. the blade had a little warp and also the spine was un even. In one area the spine was slanted toward the edge and in another it was slanted the other way and too thick. I like these razors because they are fun to work with and leave a lot of options for learning but I would not recomend them to anyone without the tools and knowledge to fix them. I have made a few razors in my time but no longer have the proper equipment to make them from scratch. This is my other option.

I have encountered another problem with the second GD razor. The pivot hole is drilled too low on the tang. The tang is not flat but V shaped somewhat. In other words it is thicker at the top. So after pinning the razor I found it will not stay in the closed position. It keeps pushing itself back up. So I have to either put spacers on the inside of the scales that are thicker washers, or grind the tang to make it flat.

This has been very interesting and helpful. I'm glade that I've only been working on mine piecemeal so that I can now incorporate all these new, to me ideas. As a learning experience I'm also glade that I'll only be "out" time rather than money if it doesn't work.
