    Default GD repair thread ?

Does anyone know off hand the thread about how to make a GD razor usable ? I have one that has been laying around a while. Might as well do something with it.

Also if you are going to re-scale the razor, then there are other things to look for too, just let me know and I will dig it out for you..

Ok a couple of other issues that might crop up with scales

Make sure you check the spine vs-tang straightness against a flat surface once you get it out of the scales better than 60% are warped

Lay the razor flat on a piece of wood and press down with a finger on the pivot hole note how far the spine is from the wood, flip the razor over and repeat.. If they are close to the same distance then you are good to go, if one is touching and the other is way off the wood then you need to either straighten the spine / tang or adapt the scales

No 3rd pins allowed, at least on the #66 the other numbers you have to measure yourself, the Tangs are too short and the Tails would hit a 3rd pin..

The spines should be Mic'd too they are often 1/100ths off if you check them, yes I said 1/100 not 1/1000 if you were do them right I would even that up then polish out again

I have noticed that the tang is very thick. Is it a good idea to thin that out.

I myself never have, I don't remember anyone posting about it either, just making the spine even if they are more than a few 1/1000ths off

Also while you are doing heavy lifting you should check the smile of the blade and correct it if needed, often the smile is not even or centered..

In my experience, the spine is an uneven thickness, and about 1/3 off the heel, there is a "bubble" in the cutting edge. That needs to be ground off and reset to have a comfortable shaver.

I'm with Glen on the spine issue as well. Even out that spine, I used a DMT 325. I wanted to play around before rescaling, so I have not polished it out yet. I just evened the spine and adapted the heel to create a slight smile on the cutting edge. I'll buff it out and rescale it later this summer.

Mine is a good shaver though, so it's going to stay in my pile for a bit.

About 75% of the GDs I have honed have needed grinding of the shoulder to be able to sharpen the heel.

Well, I have repaired the heel and the toe is now a spike point, The tang is almost straight. I did what glen said with the scales. I will know for sure when I pin it. I am making a set of tiger micarta scales for it. The spine seems good. I started honing it and the bevel is fairly even. Maybe just a little off at the heel. I will fix that. I want to thank you for the input. I think I would like to do more GDs This is fun! I will post a pic when done. Thanks again, Mack
