Thanked: 1Wostenholm EBRO
Hi
I have a razor that I can not decide what I should do. Should I leave it as is, or should I make new scales and polish it so it will work. If I make it so Vil I have text that is on the scales on the new but how do I do that? These scales are made of cow horn and not in the best condition. I can see some traces of gold paint in the text.
What is your opinion

Thanked: 3227Since you are asking, if it were mine I would clean the blade up as best i could with a metal polish and some OOOO steel wool. That likely won't get the pits all out but will make the blade look much better yet preserve some character. If the horn scales are not warped, chipped or cracked I would soak them in a bath of Neats Foot oil for a day or two, wipe them down and let them dry. They should come up pretty well and you could even try redoing the gold paint on the text. Should that not satisfy you then you could always go to sanding and polishing the blade and making new scales to your liking.

I'm with BobH on this one, it looks like it's in excellent condition and a prime candidate for the a gentle cleaning.
Personal preference is to preserve as much of the character as possible and still have a functional shaver...keep us posted and thanks for sharing.
