Pop rivets and pinning
I know some people used pop rivets in attaching scales, but I don't have much info on this. I've seen them in a hardware store but don't know how they are used and how they would apply to our interests. Could someone educate me on this?

Thanked: 8Pop rivets...hmmmm. I don't think you could control the tension especially at the pivot. I might be wrong but I don't think so.

Yeah, that would be a big issue, especially when honing/stropping. That's where balance and tension REALLY kick in with their importance.

Thanked: 2With scales, I think the force of attaching or "popping" the rivet would shatter the material, especially wood/ivory/bone. While specialized rivets are available for knifemaking, I don't think they are pop rivets. It's possible I'm wrong, as it happened once before.
If you haven't, check out texas knife makers supply at w.texasknife.com and you'll find a number of small fasteners that may work for you.
If you're set on pop rivets, I'd try mounting two pieces of thin material together to see how they hold up.

I think what he's talking about is what bg42 did, where he used the heads of pop rivets to make some very attractive pin collars on one of his razors. It was quite attractive.

I was also kicking the idea around with Nenad as he mentioned their possible applicability to straight razors. When Peter mentioned the use of the collar, I thought there was something to it.

Yeah, I was talking about Peter's idea, using the rivet's head for the collar...

purchase pop rivets with an od of 3/32" knock the centre pin
out of the rivet and drill with a 1/16" Drill you scales at the pivot point with a
3/32" drill insert pop rivet untill it is seated home and file or grind off the excess
then pin your blade as normal
Hope this helps
Kind regards Peter

Thanks Peter. That's EXACTLY what I wanted to hear. What do you think of doing something similar with brass tubing instead of using a pop rivet? That would reduce quite a bit of blade wobble.

Yep that would fix it ,there is a section on it in Bill`s CD that covers that very problem, I`ve used it with nearly every razor that I do because the pin hole is nearly always over sized and it certainly works a treat. On occasions I have to put a brass sleeve inside a brass sleeve because the hole is that big
Kind regards Peter
