Thread: Painter's tape and gold-wash

I just got my hands on some nice blades with gold-wash intact. I wanted to give them a bit more of a polish but I didn't want any polishing compound to get onto the gold-wash. Would painter's tape (green masking tape that leaves no adhesive residues) be a good way to protect it or would it damage the wash?

I would say that if tape takes off the wash then it ain't worth saving coz it will come off soon enough anyway.
Painters masking tape has hardly any glue anyway so it could be ok. As I've never done it I can't say for sure.

Thanks Gary. I'm still not 100% sure that it will be necessary, but I'm covering all of my bases. On a good note the wash survived a cleaning with Lysol lol.

I agree with Gary.
Older gold wash will either wipe off when the wind blows, or is a nucleation site for rust. I'm not quite sure how the latter works , but from experience, I have noticed that on older blades, that's where the rust was (i.e. d.duck goldege). Perhaps, that's where wet fingers usually are?

Anyway, something else that works for me is, cleaning goldwash with renaissance wax works very well. It removes the grime, but leaves the wash intact.....

This happened to me on an older but unused 7/8 Solingen razor from ebay - the blade didn't require any serious buffing but one light swipe with a cotton cloth and a little Flitz polish removed 70% of the gold wash. There's enough left to be able to see and read what was there but it's very faded looking now. I'm guessing it would have come off anyway the first time it was wiped dry after a shave.
