Thanked: 1What do ya reckon?
De-scaled 6 razors, have let two go so polished 3 ( T R Cadman Bengall about a 15/16, Dorko 420 6/8, and Wilhelm Weber 5/8) and left the sanssouci 5/8 unpolished as i wanted to keep the gold wash what do you guys think? im going to scale them in a native New Zealand wood called Kauri, more specifically Swamp Kauri Which has been in the ground around 45000 years will keep you updated when i start on scales, by the way i didn't chop up good razor scales they were all broken

Those are some really nice razors. I'm sure some kauri scales would make em look sexier. Is it gonna be plain scale or you gonna have some maori traditional motif on it?

Thanked: 1936Good looking blades, are you sure you want to do all four out of the same material? Me, I like a bit of variety. That's the cool thing about this sport thought, you hardly ever find the same "opinion"...we are all different & as long as it works, it's accepted. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Thanked: 995I'm interested in how the swamp kauri looks when you get finished. It's got more of story to it than "I found this in the firewood pile..."

Although I like Mikes comment, I still find that things made from the wood pile to be very interesting.

Those blades look like something really special.
The age of the wood sounds equally special. I can only imagine the cost of something like that...I'd probably be quite apprehensive about working with it st my current skill level

Thanked: 1My plan was to eventually do a 7 day set so the scales were to be the same but who knows i mite do 7 different nz native woods, and the swamp kauri isnt to pricey i found a supplier that cuts it up so people can lathe pen shafts, i will just get more use from the wood roughly 15nzd per blade to scale

Thanked: 2209Kauri wood is really nice. When it is polished it has a kind of iridescent look to it. The proper woodworkers term for the look I cannot remember. I have seen some knife handles made from it and I was impressed.

Chatoyance is the word and means changing with the direction of the light. The root is cat's eyes; like a cat's eye stone.
Great Idea!
