Thread: Whats the best way to take a little rust off of a blade?

I have a dremel tool with a polishing tip and some polishing compound. Im hesitant to put the compound on because I don't want to scratch the blade. What will take rust off that is gentle on the blade?

Assuming there is no gold wash , and depending on the nature of the corrosion, I use a paper towel and metal polish such as flitz, semichrome or wenol. Any of that will take gold wash off in a heartbeat. 0000 steel wool with a little Break-Free rubbed lightly will take off some rust. Try your dremel on some metal that is expendable before you mess with your razor. Give you an idea of what to expect.

Dremels are dangerous for you and your blade.

Be very careful. (Know you're going to try! .... But it's not a really good idea.)

A little trick I picked up from a fellow member was aluminum foil dipped in water. The foil is softer than the steel plus the heat generated fron friction creates aluminum oxide which, IIRC, causes a chemical reaction to rust. Yes, I've tried it and it works. I wish I could remember who it was so I can thank them.

Thanks guys. I left the dremel alone and went with your advice. I hit it with a little flitz and break free and with a little elbow grease got them looking like new. As usual your advice is greatly appreciated!
