Warthog ivory as scale material.
I really like the look of hog tusks and I'd like to use it for razor scales but I can't find anything about it being used for staight razors, only knifes, is there a reason for this? are hog tusks unsuitable for razor scales for some reason?
Is there anyone who's worked with it before that can chime in.

I haven't used it, but why wouldn't it work? If it's good enough for knives, why not straights? I think it's a great idea, but I'm fresh out of warthog. I wonder if wild hog (as in, what's in the U.S.) would work. Don't see why not. Keep us posted.

I'm definitely not an expert but I can
see no reason why it can't be used.

Warthog ivory as scale material.
You know what they say: "they use every part but the squeal"!

I have a razor done with warthog ivory scales by Robert Williams. I remember him telling me that it was very tough stuff and wore out bandsaw blades. Looks cool though.

Thanked: 13245For razor scales you need a basic starting blank size near 1x6x1/8 inches unless you plan on Hybrid, Inlayed, or Layered blanks..
Any material that can be Strong, Flexible, and Waterproof (or at least resistant) at the 1/10-1/8 in thickness should work

Thanked: 2027It works like any other Ivory (or so called Ivory the problem with warthog tusks is they tend to have a major curve to them.As jim says they can be tough on tools as the outer dentine is like cutting glass.Might also look at Hippo tusks, far easier to work with.
