Default Warthog ivory as scale material.

I really like the look of hog tusks and I'd like to use it for razor scales but I can't find anything about it being used for staight razors, only knifes, is there a reason for this? are hog tusks unsuitable for razor scales for some reason?

Is there anyone who's worked with it before that can chime in.

I haven't used it, but why wouldn't it work? If it's good enough for knives, why not straights? I think it's a great idea, but I'm fresh out of warthog. I wonder if wild hog (as in, what's in the U.S.) would work. Don't see why not. Keep us posted.

I'm definitely not an expert but I can
see no reason why it can't be used.

I have a razor done with warthog ivory scales by Robert Williams. I remember him telling me that it was very tough stuff and wore out bandsaw blades. Looks cool though.

For razor scales you need a basic starting blank size near 1x6x1/8 inches unless you plan on Hybrid, Inlayed, or Layered blanks..

Any material that can be Strong, Flexible, and Waterproof (or at least resistant) at the 1/10-1/8 in thickness should work

Thanks for the responses everyone, I don't have any project razors in need of scales at the moment but some hog ivory is now at the top of my "to buy" list.

You don't happen to have any pictures, do you? I'd really like to se how it looks on a razor.

It works like any other Ivory (or so called Ivory the problem with warthog tusks is they tend to have a major curve to them.As jim says they can be tough on tools as the outer dentine is like cutting glass.Might also look at Hippo tusks, far easier to work with.

The straight one is walrus and the smiler is pre-ban elephant ivory.
