An excellent (scientific) article on cell rot, what causes it, how to prevent it and what happens when it begins. Some of the responses were spot on, but I would have thought there was a way to neutralize the reaction once it started

Excellent article! Light (esp. ultraviolet light), heat, high humidity are problematic for celluloid. Ventilation is important. This article will make me reconsider my air tight tote boxes for storing my SRs. My totes are good for blocking light and the gel packs are good for reducing humidity...but not so good for ventilation. Hmmmm...need to rethink this...

In the article in the section on temperature it says that degraded cellulose should never be stored in temperatures above 30 degrees C. And it seems that 30 degrees is pretty normal during the summer these days!!

This raises an interesting question...has anyone here ever experienced spontaneous combustion with a razor?

I find it kinda funny that all the Greenies are so concerned about the affects that plastics have in landfills. However, as stated in this article, degradation of these types of plastics is inevitable. It's not "If", but "when." Also, while the Greenies want plastics to go away, we want to preserve it.

Thank You JimmyHAD for the pictures. I read the article but just couldn't wrap my mind around what it looks like. Pictures speak a thousand words and these are very descriptive!!

Note the freckled appearance/pattern of rust on the end of the blade in the second pic. That is typical of cell rot IME. That 'stuff' on the scales in the bottom pic is wet even though the razor was stored dry in a closed drawer.

This is an "Adoration" that came to me with some other beaters. You can see the color change in the scales and the corresponding rust on the blade.

As I had told you it's not IF but WHEN the celluloid decides to head south that it will start gassing and ruin your razors.

Jimmie posted this pic about 3 years ago, it shows what Will Happen IF the blade is left in gassing scales.
