Quick question
I have a metal worker next to my place of work who appears to make all sorts (small parts and huge structures)
I was considering asking them to make a blade for a straight razor from new but wasn't sure if there was any prerequisites for the steel used ?

I read that I may not need to have it forged? If not what metal do I ask them to use to cut it from

Thanked: 1371Making a functional razor is not as simple as cutting out some metal. If the shop doesn't have experience with razors or at least knives it's unlikely that you will get something useful.
If he has the experience required you don't need to tell him what steel to use or how to do it.Last edited by HNSB; 02-25-2013 at 08:39 PM.

Not to discourage you, but if the person making it has absolutely no experience with razors, I doubt it will be a success.
A razor has a very subtle geometry. I've seen / handled first attempts by knifemakers, and some are really, really bad. Just because one is a knife maker however, does not mean one can create a razor. It may look like a razor, but there will be enough issues to make it all but useless.
A person making a razor should have enough knowledge of metal working, metallurgy AND razors.
Even then it will be a learning process.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
