Thread: Who does brush restores?

I am aware of the multitude of people that restore razors and hone, etc. Who does brush restores? I have today found a great vintage Rubberset handle that is going to need a new knot. It's a thick one though. The knot is around 28-29mm. I was thinking a high lofted finest knot or a lower lofted silvertip. I would like it to have nice backbone. Anyone have suggestions who I could talk to?

Most guys order a knot from the golden nib and replace the know them selves.

Is in most cases pretty easy to DIY.

Really? I don't have a way to get the knot out of the handle. That's really the only thing I need to get done. Is it hard to do this? I don't have a lot of power tools.

I believe gsixgun.restores brushes.. and he also posted a way to remove the brush do a search.if u stick the bristles in a vice and twist it removes them. Glen explains it..

Well after some motivation here I took some pliers to it and the hairs came out very easily but the hole is not very deep. Is this normal? I assumed that the hole would be quite a bit deeper than this. Am I correct?

Looks like you have epoxy left in the hole nothing a spade bit and drill won't take care of.

Should I fill it with something before I install a knot?

What type of knot is recommended? I like a little scritch but hate floppy.

How high should set the loft?

Now you at the point were you need to determine knot size,diameter at the base of the knot,go no further until you have the knot in hand,than you can adjust the loft,wait until you have the knot JMO
If you face lather,about 50MM loft,bowl lather about 55mm

The opening is 28mm. So I think i'm going to go with a 28mm Finest from TGN. Does that sound right?

Research says that it's soft but good backbone. Sounds perfect.
