Thanked: 0Newbie blade polishing advice
I picked up this henckels on the bay a while back (I believe the quote from my wife when it arrived was "honey, you need to stop buying razors!) and wanted to try my hand at restoration. I managed to get the scales off (first time...didn't crack 'em
The blade looks to be in great shape, but I want to get it shiny again. I've been a bit of reading on cleaning and polishing, I'm just not sure what grit I should start with. Any ideas?

If you just want to polish only...maas, flitz, mothers mag aluminum polish, or any chrome or steel safe polish will work. You could hand sand the razor wet with 2k or 4k wet/dry sandpaper from the auto parts store, then polish with liquid polish for that extra shiny. Good luck either way, and post pics when you are done. Oh and the maas and flitz can be used to clean up the scales as well; I get mine from the local Ace hardware.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

I usually start with 0000 or 000 synthetic steel wool and MAAS, just to see what I'm really dealing with, and then decide from there. It's fast and won't leave any scratch marks (unless the razor has a serious mirror finish, which I have rarely seen on a vintage blade - in that case I'll use a rag or paper towel with MAAS instead).
