    Default Pop quiz, hotshot.

Yes, that's a quote from the mid-90's blockbuster Speed. And I remember when you could rent it from Blockbuster. So you've figured out that I'm a man of a certain age. But what do you know about this random picture of corroded metal under magnification? What kind of metal is it? How was it made? How old/new is it? Hint: the second picture shows the edge.Attachment 124470Name: photo 3.jpg

Hey, that's the blade on that GB Anchor I just paid $1500 for. That pitting shouldn't be a problem for honing would it?

Edge of a 1938 Puma that I bought off eBay. 1st photo as received; 2nd photo after 6 months of honing.

Most typically old Sheffield hand forged steel. But not necessarily so, I have seen it on more modern edges as well. Cell rot will lead to the same result.

What magnification is the metal? Do the colors in the photo match real life pretty well? Is the yellow color from the lighting or the metal?

That is a surface I have found restoring the thin part of old frameback Japanese razors and some crucible steel razors that were originally forged.. Kind of a spalled effect left after the loose corrosion is removed and the surface cleaned.

Very interesting, and thanks for the link. As to some of the questions: this is 40x magnification; the color may be owing to lighting conditions. Here are a couple more images. The first one is at 20x, the second is 40x.Name: photo 3.jpg
