Thanked: 1restoration by hand
So i'm restoring my first straight razor by hang using sandpaper. Just curious what sandpaper progression I should use? It doesn't have any pits but it does have some active rust and just general discolouration. Also should I use wet and dry paper or can I get away with regular sand paper?
Cheers.

Depend how bad the razor looks but if i wast my razor.
200 and up to 2500.
From about 600grit use wd40 while you sanding. Good luck

Thanked: 4Use automotive sandpaper. Get it at Autozone, O'reilly's, Advanced Auto, etc... There's a mixed package of low to high grit paper for $6. There's another package of the same types of paper but MUCH smaller size (1.5 inch wide vs 8 or so) for $4.
Use something to hold the sandpaper instead of your fingers unless you're wolverine and heal instantly after being cut. Big pink eraser, sponge, rounded wood block, wooden dowel rod, cat, foam, etc... anything is better than your fingers. Even if the razor is dull, you'll be surprised how easily you'll cut yourself no matter how careful you're being.
Look in the library for some of the articles on restoring the blade. Lots of good info.
