Thread: Steak knife resurrected?

So I bought a pretty rare razor from the bay (A SPIKE with gold spike inlay) It's scales are sweet but the blade has lots of tiny chips and is corroding. Can blades like this be ground down and polished to be used again?

Without pictures, we can't say much either way. But I would try some mothers polish and a whole bunch of elbow grease (I feel bad with sandpaper) and see how it cleans up. After that, there are some people on this site that are wizards with fixing that kind of stuff depending on how bad it is.

Looks like it will take a good bit of tlc and maybe getting a little more aggressive, but it should at least be cleanable (depending on the depth of the rust.) It should also take an edge (again depending on rust and all.)


It all depends on how much you want to put into it.

I dont know if you want to make a project out of this yourself, but i have a proposition. I'm in medical school and its pretty stressful. i have little things that relax me. Contrary to most chores, the longer these things take the better. That looks like it could keep me busy for hours. Send it to me, ill put an edge on it, and then ill send it back no charge. im not going to try to buff it, ill leave that up to you. im afraid i have no experience or the tools for rust removal and buffing.

That edge is not chipped,it is corroded away.I think it is toast.JMO

It appears to have cell rot from what I can tell from the picture. Meaning the scales are the cause and need to be removed or it will just happen again. Hard to tell from the pic but the blade may be beyond salvaging.
