    I hate to be a spoilsport, but Escher was a brand, wasn't it (the name of the quarry) so if it really was an Escher, wouldn't it be advertised as such, instead of thuringer?

    Escher was a brand, not a quarry. As far as I've understood, Escher, Droescher and a few other brands all carried hones from the same Thuringer quarry (or a series of quarries close to each other).
