Has anyone here tried foil tape?

Just so long as you don't add wrinkles to the tape...

I haven't - didn't know it existed until you mentioned it actually. Is it very pliable?

It's very pliable, just imagine sturdy, sticky foil wrap

    That makes me wonder...

    • If the curved edge of the spine doesn't exactly match the smile or frown on the blade's edge (assuming the use of a 3" or wider hone): Wouldn't the tape on the spine always show an uneven wear pattern?

Where can one obtain said tape?

That sounds like an idea worth exploring. I wonder how it would hold up on serious restoration-type honing.

Any place that sells HVAC supplies 3M makes foil tape. Here in Oklahoma you can find it at any Locke Supply, and I would think any hardware store or even Walmart would carry it, but I confess I've never looked for it there

Not sure how I missed this thread last year, but here I've been honing away with the SRP equivalent of the Treaty of Versailles.

Problem: you want to shave with a work of art with all manner of pimped-up features on the spine (inlays, filework, etc.), naturally you wish to protect the fancy bits when you hone, but the purists will have that taping the spine is deception.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the 'Livi Steel Cuff' (Copyright 2007). The steel cuff protects the spine and bears all the natural hone wear as God intended. (And don't anyone point out that the steel used for the cuff might be different to the steel used for the blade and therefore the hone wear will be inconsistent with the edge wear... -- it might not matter for the shave, but goddamit it, it still ain't honest!)

That is exactly the type of thing I think was used to hone Wedges back in the day too...

that cuff would be a nice thing for SRD to commission someone to create, so we can all stop torturing ourselves on our wedges!

I bet back in the day some people just eye-measured the angle, like we do today with kitchen knives.
