Can you explain why you set the bevel with tape on the spine?

First off please don't confuse this thread with a honing thread, this is an extreme restoration process not used for general honing....

    But to answer your question
1.Check in the Wiki and the honing forum there are tons of threads that explain this in detail...
    2. I mostly hone other peoples razors and I refuse to mess up their spines on their razors, also it is my belief that one layer of tape does not effect the angle enough to actually change the shave, and I further believe that it actually helps the longevity of the edge... No I don't have any proof...
    3. Tape on the spine eliminates half the wear on the hone itself as you are only honing the edge not the spine...

Yep, I got that. I'm new here, not illiterate!

I see, that makes perfect sense, thanks!

If I may add another point?

I actually did my first bevel rebuilds without tape, but decided to go for tape ever since. I do remove the tape once I shift form the "rebuilding" stage into the more regular honing stage, but that's just personal preference. When rebuilding you generally don't use the light-handed honing strokes from the traditional honing methods. The applied pressure doesn't need to be that big to flex the blade a bit. As a consequence, the bevel planes become a bit broader than they would be without the flexing. When you quit using pressure further up the progression, this leaves a small strip of coarse scratch marks at the onset of the bevel. Two or three layers of tape, while in the pressure mode, compensates for that.

Just adding another point why it's better to tape for this job. I also found that I need to apply the tape about 15 minutes before I start honing. It may be my brand of tape, but if I don't give it some curing time, the honing water quickly gets between the tape and the steel.

    Happy holidays,
    Bart.

I went through some agonizing over whether to tape or not when I first started. I started this thread to find an answer. It turned out to be somewhat of a controversial subject at that time. Anyhow, I had RAD badly and accumulated so many razors to practice on that I soon determined it would be too hard to remember which I had taped and which I had not so I decided to use one layer of tape on all of them. I've honed a lot of razors since then and the tape hasn't created any problems. I( may have created a few but not because of the tape.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    [QUOTE=
I use two layers of tape because the DMTs cut fast enough that the third piece is irrelevant and I step down to 1 layer (or no layers) before the 8k.[/QUOTE]

Sorry for the question, but I don't follow (nothing new, I'm afraid ). What is the purpose of the 2 or 3 pieces of tape in the first place? In the post, it said the tape was to focus the honing to the edge. Like I said, I'm not getting it.

Anyways, I know this is an antique post, but if anybody's still around, and can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks,

An updated version with Pics to help show the progression as you lower the bevel angle and why
