Thread: Problem with honing the MAB Dwarf

Today me and my colleague tried to hone the MAB. Unfortunately every time we were trying to finish it we could not get it keen and under magnification it showed nicely polished edge but it was not even anymore. It looked like we ripped semilunar bits out. We used Norton 1000/4000/8000 and later I swapped Norton 1000 to Chocera 1000 with the same result.
Anyone can put some light to this?

To me it sounds like your edge is falling apart because of deep scratches left by lower grits but it could be many other things. Have you tried pyramid method of honing? It is almost bullet method especially if you are just starting. The classified has an instructional DVD that is very easy to follow. This one is excellent.

We thought too. We lapped the stones repeatedly as we thought that there could be a contamination. We stropped on a cotton strop between stones as we thought that it could be the case that there could be some grit left on blade. We checked it undr a microscope that all old scratches were gone. Before finish there was a decently polished edge. Few strokes on higher grit and the edge went. Look at the picture there you can see few of those faults.

I had a similar problem once.
First thing that came into my mind was:
the temper is ruined. Becuase yours is antique and maybe it has been recently purchased by you,
you don´t know what it has been through. Maybe someone ruined it.

But in my case it was a brand new Wacker that I had for 6 months without problems.
I even sharpened it several times without any problems.
But once I got exactly those semilunar chips everytime I finished.

I couldn´t get rid of that, no matter what I did.
So I decided to send it to a honemeister,
who had no problems at all.

It must have been something I did but did not see.
So maybe you try to just give it someone else
and see if he encounteres the same problems.

If you want to try something, try to finish the blade on the norton 4k side
with chromium oxide afterwards. Maybe you will bypass the problem this way

If you get it figured out, let us know. I'm still not satisfied with the edges on any of my three MAB razors

or me on mine. I love the razor, it cuts hair, but it's not as good as I think it could be.

Hope I never get this problem, and hopefully you will figure it out. If I were to put my money on it I would say the steel used on it is faulty, maybe the last batch or something.

Thank you guys. It looks that I will imvest in some rough DMT to make that grinding of the rotten material easier. If the razor has to go lets be it. I have ine more. I already have taken about 1mm of and hopefully not much more to go. I am thinking to experiment with coticules and CF and CRO pasted strop for finish. Will keep you posted.

I think that is unlikely, simply because between me, Lee and the OP, that's 5 MABs (not all exactly the same) that are not quite performing as well as we think they should.

I think I will have a go at mine tomorrow.
