I think after sharpening 10 razor i have find why people used soaps while they sharpen the razor.Actually in last stage of sharpening.
I am sure many of you have or had experience with chinese 12 k.
while you hone blade after 80-100 laps you feel like blade sticks to the stone. to move it forward you will need to use more force.
I know many natural hones do this.
I did same experiement with this belgian coticule.
i sharpen the blade and it was in great condition. i checked the edge and i should say just strop and shave. i didn't stop in this stage.
i made some soap and put it on the hone . Interesting enough all tension was gone. Small details if you are putting too much soap blade just doesn't touch the stone. That is why you need to put not so much soap just enough which will take tension out. and do 25-40 more laps . i did this and checked edge again. it was very fine . i was worry about edge will brake down but it didn't.
i have not shave with that blade yet but when i do i let you know how it feels.
Just my 0.2 cent try this and see what happens on your coticules.
hope this helps.

I haven't re-read the whole thread and porosity may have been mentioned before ? Could it be a possibility that at some sort of micro level porosity is creating the bubble phenomenon ?
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Jimmy i did keep this stone inside distilled water and washed ,lapped . still made bubbles but less.
i think (my own opinion) it has been used with soap for a long time. i should say owner must be barber.
it still does bubbles but less. i made 1 more test on this stone.
i sharpen 1 more blade and after i am done honing i went 1 more step.
i make a soap put on the hone and tried hone oops at first i failed .razor wasn't touching the hone then i realize i made a mistake. i put less soap and BINGO .i made 20-30 laps and checked edge. Edge was wonderful. i have sharpen 2 blades for srp member. he will take shave test and come in here leave honest opinion. i asked for it. lets see what he will say.

A trick I do is fill my shaving bowl with water and the soap residue dissolves into it. If I need a little extra I add *one* drop of dish soap.

Thanked: 2Hey all,
Lil off topic. At the request of Mr. Hi Bud, I'm doin a lil review of a razor I picked up here a week ago. You guys will have to bear with me as this will be the first review I've written on straights.
The razor itself is a 1/4", thick 13/16 wide, shoulderless barber notched hollow with horn handles. The name of the razor is hard to read as the majority of the script has been removed. It might possibly of French orgin as the only part that I can really make out says "elleraut." Sorry, I don't know how to upload pics otherwise I'd just post a pic of her. Possibly Sham still has a snapshot of this somewhere.
Sham did a wonderful job restoring the razor as I could almost see my reflection in the blade. Sham took pity on me being a newbie and showed great consideration on making the point a lil duller so I wouldn't carve my noob face. However, I told him to make it as sharp as he could. And he did accomodate. This final finish was done on a Coticule (possibly the bubbly one in question?) rather than his stated favorite, the Escher.
It is a pretty quiet shaver and it did a wonderful job all around. I did manage to nick myself in the stache area on the against the grain part of the shave. Mostly poor technique on my part. I'm still learning how to "scythe" properly. This is the first time I've shaved with a razor this wide. Though I have a few choppers, my stable of razors are mainly in the 5/8 range. I think at this point I'm gonna have to start breaking out the choppers for use.
Sham, if you did use this particular coticule on my razor, it came out really nice. No worries. Perhaps this is why you wanted me to write the review here instead eh?
I'm picking up another razor from him soon. Man, this place is bad for the wallet.

Thanked: 2Sham, I guess those razors you have taped up on the previous page are the ones I purchased. If thats the case, then I shaved with the one on the left. I'd thought they looked a lil familiar.
Thanks again.
