I only have one oil stone and haven't really been using it much yet. But, the norton oil seems reasonable to me. A little can was about $6. It doesn't stink too bad and seems to be easy to clean up after using.

I am a mineral oil guy, myself. Mostly because it is a cheap, very light oil and the clean up, is much easier.

    Thanks,

Personally, I like Circle Cut's Saftee Cut Cutting Oil the best of the commercially available oils I've tried.

Reading through some of the older literature, Seal Oil seems to be the most highly regarded, although it's not something I've tried (or ever will). Other commonly recommended oils are Neatsfoot and Olive Oil, I've used Neatsfoot with reasonable results, but found Olive Oil to be too thick. Knight, in his early catalogue of different hones, recommended sperm; I'm reasonably sure this means some sort of Whale Oil, either that, or he had HAD worse than anyone here.

    Kindest regards,
    Alex

I use Ballistol. It has mineral oil in it, but you can "thin" it with water as it will emulsify. I usually mix anywhere from 50/50 to 4/1 water/oil for oilstone honing. Sometimes full strength, depending on the thickness desired. Really economical when mixed. 16 ounces costs about $10 US.
