Thanked: 3bevel setting with a swaty
so Ive got a dull razor and a three line swaty
the razor wouldn't shave any leg/arm hair
I used a three line swaty with regular water and quite a lot of hard pressure and very aggressive strokes
i like experimenting
after maybe only 5 to 10 minutes very aggressive honing on the swaty the razor shaves leg hair again, not as good as should be, but it's getting better
I might experiment some more later to see if I could get it near shave ready condition and a possible shave test, altho I'm not sure it's going to work, the fact it can shave hair again is pretty impressive to me
it's not shaving the hair as easily as it should, but we'll see what happens in the future it might just work or it might not

Three line swaty is very course stone and fast cutting. if you check past posts you will find about it. you can definitely set bevel with it. ( i have done it myself)
i used 3 line swaty australia
3 line swaty German
3line swaty American
swaty atustralia
frictionate 00
That razor get shave ready condition.
You may wonder why so many 3 line swaty's in there.
They are in order courser to finer.
Note ; I am talking about really 3 line swaty stones(which has actual words three line swaty) not the written 3 line swaty( example swaty, australia, murbrug something ok)
hope this helps

Most hones will hone a razor to get a bevel no matter what. We just use grits and other size stones to achieve the edge's peak at a quicker pace. I have set bevels on the swaty 3 line (The real ones) and I then moved to finer stones for polishes, it works.

Huh ?? That is a new one for me. I've always had the luxury of a sure enough 1k bevel setter of one brand or another. If you guys say it can be done I won't doubt your word but I think I will stick with my coarser stones for the bevel setting and leave the Swaty for the touchups.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 108Me too. I'm sure you guys are right, but just to throw in my two cents, it's worth stressing that the fact that an old ebay razor begins to keen up quickly on a given hone doesn't necessarily mean you're really resetting the bevel. It all depends on the starting condition of the razor. Many ebay finds are dull and rounded, and basically bevel-less in the sense that you're not even reaching the "edge" when you start honing. If you've got one of these and within five minutes on a swaty you're shaving arm hair then yes, that's a significant indication of the swaty's cutting power.
But a fair number of ebay rescues in fact have good edge geometry, so to speak, and these'll keen up pretty quick even on a polishing hone. But that doesn't mean you're really resetting the bevel, because you're not removing all the old corroded metal and exposing the new.
Just something to think about.

I think i need to clear things in here a little
Three line swaty will cut a little faster then NORTON 4k and bevel will be in almost same level.
There is a differences between
3 line swaty which most people uses for final touch up and actual three line swaty.
Please understand this.
hope this helps a little

Thanked: 108Yes, I got this, and it was definitely new to me – thanks!
What I wrote was a response to the original post. I was just warning in general against concluding that a given hone is a good bevel-setter just because an old ebay razor responds quickly to it. It's possible (in fact quite common in my experience) for an old razor to have good edge geometry AND corroded steel. This kind of edge will respond very quickly even to a finishing hone and will start popping hairs, so it may feel like you're resetting the bevel but you're really not, and due to the punk steel you'll get a scratchy shave and/or an edge that won't last.

just to get this right:
The Swaty that actually has the words "three line" wirtten on him
will probably cut a bit faster than a 4k and polish *only* as much as 4k?
