Thread: Esher Finishing vs Jnat

Does anyone know more about the quartz in Escher stones?
Is it of the same shape as in Jnats?

no they are different in shape, they are completely different stones by origin and composition so can't really be compared.

Yes I know they are all different but how different, anyone got any SEMs?
I have done my share of strange experiments like Coticule as nagura on a hard Jnat and Escher on the same.
The Coticule mess everything up, I guess the garnets just keep tearing up more and more of the quartz in the Jnat, but an Escher on jnat works fine.
I also got some Thuringen that is a little coarser than my Eschers and those stones are very hard to tell apart from the Tsushima.

Are you asking if any of us have a "Scanning Electron Microscope"?

Unfortunately, Someone probably does have access to one.

I don't know, maybe it's me, but I think we tend to over quantify these things. It's a rock. It sharpens razors.
I wonder how they ever got by in the 1800's?

But if someone would have pictures taken with one of an Escher, why would that be bad?

I know they got by in the 1800's, what has that to do with wanting to know about why and how some stones work?
I like to know about the things I use, if this is the wrong place to ask then my bad!

I use razors and stones all the time and like it, I shave with a straight razor not because it's the state of the art but because it feels good.
I always thought this forum was the place to go if you wanted your hobby to be able to stretch further, into stones, razors, history of shaving or what ever...
So I sincerely hope "Advanced Honing Topics" can stretch further than "It's a rock. It sharpens razors".
