Escher Co Straight Razor Water Hone with Dressing Stone and Original Wood Box | eBay

This was fascinating to watch all the way through. I have a couple of questions for the historians about this hone.
Did anyone ever see an Escher in a wooden box in this configuration before? And has anyone seen a slurry that was not the width of the hone itself. Like so many of the vintage pieces, hones, razors, etc. I would love to know the history. I guess that is part of the fun that there is a history and in many cases the history will continue long after the present caretakers are gone as someone else more eloquently noted concerning polishing a Japanese sword.

Someone thought it was genuine to the tune of $1285 USD.

Wow, that is crazy. I really need to find one of these at an antique store and see what all the fuss is about.

Do you believe it is not genuine? (Honest question, I am not knowledgable about these things)

Just for clarification the OP, me, did not suggest the stone was not an Escher. The essence of the question is the presentation box and the size of the slurry stone.

Looks all genuine to me, the slurry stone size reminds me of the hinge box Escher, but its 3/8 shorter, probably used that size since it was a little to small for the hinge box.

And going by this size chart this stone would be a 10"

Larger stones are a bit more fragile, so at one time in it's life I would say the owner made a wooden box for it. The slurry stone is most likely thuringian, but I agree that it is a bit large for "original" issue. As a set, it's a nice set...as for price, it went about 4x more than I would have given for it...

The 10" is more uncommon than the smaller sizes. Apparently two of the bidders wanted it bad. Notice that both didn't come in until the last seconds. You can tell by the feedback numbers who bid and when.

Had those two individuals not gone for it the stone would have finished at $757.00. Still a healthy sum. Another example of how unwise it is to drive the price up in bidding wars before the very end of the auction.

That box and configuration, with the large slurry stone, was standard for that size hone.

I stand corrected, I was just basing my info on NOS stones that I have seen in the past...none that I have seen have had a wooden box. Thanks for the info Jimmy.

I just looked at that chart Martin posted...$12.00 per DOZEN for the 10", amazing how the dollar has shrunk in size.

Went to the Chevy dealer with a buddy who was browsing. A new Camero SS is $48,000. The regular Camero can be had for $38,000 if you don't care about the bells and whistles. Remembering when the SS cost $3,800.00, and wondering why/how someone could/would pay fifty thousand for a car ......... of course now you can get a 7 year loan.
