Nice pick up. Straights made in Ireland are quite rare. The few that I have seen have all been made in Dublin so there must have been a small razor making indusrty based there at some stage.

Yep. According to the reading I've been doing, James Read (incidentally, the uncle of Arthur Guinness) set up shop as a cutler in 1670, then passed the business on to his son John, who passed it on to Thomas Read. They made swords, knives, razors, corkscrews and more right in Dublin.

Congratulations on your find. It is a wonderfully shaped blade profile. Enjoy.

    So, a little update:

The razor has made it's way across the pond, and as it turns out, is "Sunday" from a 7 day set! Plus, I'm not positive, but I think the scales may be ivory (any way to tell for sure?) since there's a milky grain pattern to them, they're real thin, don't have the same feeling as any celluloid scales I've ever held and they seem heavier and more dense than bone or horn. Oh, and the wedge is lead and the tail seems a bit on the stubby side, so I'm guessing a manufacture year of maybe 1850-1875, but that's a wild guess.

Unfortunately, another razor just like this one was sold by the same seller and I just didn't have the funds to try and snag it, too. So, if any of you were the winning bidder, let me know if it's another part of the set!
