Thread: Some Straight Razors I Came Accross

Another thing I might do is go to the Razor forum, look at the 'razor clubs' sub forum. You might see some of those brands, plus you'll get a better idea of what kind of condition most guys look for. As gugi said, once honed those razors will shave (add another $20 to $30 to the price) but they are not in really great condition as they are.

I've seen some fairly nice stuff in our SRP classifieds recently for around $50 shipped and shave ready to boot. There was a Wester Bros Manganese Steel in there for $55 with bone scales and shave ready. I was really tempted but I have 3 or 4 already and the seller said it was for a new guy so I let someone else snag it. Keep an eye on the classifieds and you may do better.

Thanks JoeSomebody. I didn't even think of that. I took some better photos and will post when I get a little more time. The razor in second picture appears to have bone or ivory scales. I have better photos of that one especially. One or two of the razors have slight rust at the pivot.

Did I see a shaving mug and a wooden handled brush in one of those pics? Maybe they could through it into the deal. Could be the best brush you ever had. I feel like a drug dealer. Good luck.

The razor in the second picture probably has bone scales, but that funky black and brown coloring does not look good. The only material that should have that is mammoth ivory bark or fossilized stuff. From that angle it's not possible to tell anything about the blade.

Here's something in the same price range (cheaper when you factor in the honing costs) from the classifieds here - that's probably the condition you want to be looking for in vintage razors:


It's also better to buy a razor that is already honed and tested (of course only from sellers with the corresponding reputation), as that means you don't have to gamble on how would the razor shave if at all.

What are your intentions, are you looking for something to restore or just an older razor to hone up and use? It's hard to tell from the pictures. The razors you've seen aren't necessarily bad, but I think I've seen better razors on eBay for about the same price.
I agree with watching the SRP classifieds, the razors offered there are nice and are usually set at a very reasonable price. The sellers don't seem to be interested in profit as much as finding a good home for a well liked razor.

Butch I know the place well. I bought a few DE gillettes there a couple weeks back. Great finds an prices can be negotiated if over $50 tagged. That being said gugi's advice is spot on to me. That wade is nice an ready to go. I just saw that it has sold. Hope you snagged it. I know I would've if I had seen it before it sold. Well that was my loss. Thanks gugi for thinking of me. Didn't see it in time. Beautiful razor. I thought I would go ahead and post these photos. My interest in any of these at this time would be restoration for eventual use. I think I will probably purchase one of the new razor and strop kits (shave ready) for immediate use. Right now that makes the most sense. Anyway here are the photos:

Not sure 'bout the first ones, but that double cut cattaragus oughta be nice, love mine. Ditto on gettin' a shave ready razor though.
