Thanked: 0Some Straight Razors I Came Accross
Hello,
I was in an antique mall and found several straight razors I thought might be good purchases. If any of you think they might be OK then I will go back and haggle. All had pretty good looking blades (no nicks, no frowns and little ware). I found a Maher & Grosh for $45, A.J. Jordon Hollow Ground $50, Joseph Allen & Sons NON-XLL $69, Wellington 5/8 Hand Forged (not sure of price), and a Zartina Cutlery Works (Solingen Germany not sure of price). All had their rails (handles). No rust on any blades and all were sharp. I have some photos I can post but not very good. I can get better ones if that will help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks So Much,
Butch

First picture is Cattaraugus Cutlery $95, 2nd is A.J. Jordan $50, 3-4-6 Joseph Allen & Sons $65, 5 Maher & Grosh $45. Hopes this helps. The other two I couldn't get photos of. I will go back in this week and use a real camera. Thanks agai for any help or comments.

We do not do appraisals - it is up to you if you want to spend that much money on these razors, I am sure you have other alternatives you're comparing to.
Now on the condition - you can probably shave with them without restoring them but they need to be honed, as based even on these blurry pictures they are not anywhere near sharp enough for shaving.

Thanked: 0I am so sorry if I offended anyone. I wasn't looking for a monetary appraisal and to that end maybe shouldn't have posted the associated price with each razor. In some of the other posts on this sight it was mentioned that so many beginners purchase razors before seeking knowledge and advice about the item and end up buying junk. Obviously I know that these razors are not shave ready and need to be sterilized as well as sharpened. I believe I found six razors all in about the same condition and I was looking for a consensus as to what might be a better brand or manufacturer, like with guitars Gibson, Fender, Harmony. Once again sorry for overstepping my bounds,
Butch

I don't think you overstepped any boundaries butch. That being said since I am in Dayton also where did you find these? I promise not to snag them from you LOL. I think you could make any one of these shave ready. Without talking money my pick would probably be the AJ Jordan. Not sure of the maker but overall condition verse price seems best to me. IMO. Good luck with what you decide. Glad to finally see another Dayton fella on here.

Thanked: 0Thanks for reply Rollincoal69. Yes....it's good to see other Daytonians here. The store is called Antiques Village located across from Sam's Club (off of 725 Dayton Mall area). Place is huge. They have display cases up front for delicate or small items and thats where I saw the razors. Also a nice collection of DE razors. I'm headed back there tonight after work to have another look. Will probably take more pictures (this time I brought a better camera). I will also take a closer look at the blades. I will post back with what I find.

Thanked: 24my interrest would go out to the razor in the second picture but that's more because the scales might just be ivory (I'm NOT an expert, couldn't validate this statement even with the razor in my hand), I would be fascinated by the idea that it could verry well be so.
the third also seems like a save choice, made in Sheffield, hollow ground, seems good. It's realy hard to differentiate between brands, there are probably differences but to many forgers and handwork to get a clear insight so my personal reasoning is that almost all vintage blades were made to shave with and will consequently all be capable of it if it's not to rusted
