Someone probably just wanted those scales. It's been mentioned before that scales collectors pay a lot of money for certain ones. I don't see anything special, but I'm not a scales collector.

WOW, that's terrible! I don't know whether to feel bad for the buyer or to blame him for not doing his homework!
Certain patterns of scale of that style are exceedingly rare in good condition -particularly with the coloring intact. Not my thing, but the people who want them don't care if the blade is trashed
I have a Dremel... I can fix that one right up!
Multi-colored Arkansas stone looks more like a coticule. In the questions sections someone even tells the seller the stone is a coticlue. Can the title of a listing not be changed?
Vintage Multi Colored Arkansas Novaculite Whetstone Fine Grit 7" x 1 1 2" x 3 4" | eBay
I've had to revise a title before. I just sent the seller message & told him/her that they should be able to revise the title on the Cuticle.
I think it is something like 12 hrs before an item mens certain things can be revised unless they have changed it.
EDIT: Well, it seems eBay has changed things around again. The seller wrote back & said they tried but it wouldn't let them. It just goes to show that you must check your listing first or make sure you know what you are listing. I have had things happen to me before & gone back & changed them. Oh well........
I hope it works out for them.
here's an interesting one. the seller states it's a frictionite (a belgian one at that) doesn't look like one to me. i contacted him to ask how he knew it was one. waiting for a reply.

Very interesting tintin. I'm wondering what their reply will be, if he/she replies! I looked at their other items & found this fishing lure they want $15,000 BIN or starting bid is $4,500! Now I wonder how they came up with that figure?

I know people need money for the holidays but this is just ridiculous!!!
That listing should have opened this thread [emoji23]
Well clowns are there for entertainment purposes!
Apparently this seller didnt research his goods very well...

This one cracks me up!
Antique Hyena Steel German Straight Olex Razor Blade 1199 Gust Iserlon Solvoen | eBay
Martin, you're incredible!
Apparently he has the one with the blue glass beads along with the 7 link gold chain & treble hook. He has a rare lure but I don't know if it is worth $15k! Perhaps it is worth the starting bid but I'm no collecting fisherman. I guess I need to start Googling some of these things that some people want high prices for. I wonder what it is worth?
:deal::dropjaw::dropjaw:Quote:
Seller Notes:
chipped blade, some patina on the blade
And in the description::gaah::aargh: A razor doesn't get that serious of cell rot from either tortoise OR bakelite. It gets it from celluloid.Quote:
It has a beautiful tortoise shell bakelite handle...
...some patina...
I love to fish, but I'm not in it for the antiques factor... Surely that's just stupidity, if it was really worth that much the guy would talking directly to people interested in it, not putting it on ebay.
Similarly, anyone that serious about fishing antiques (and that cashed up) would be talking to people directly, not trawling (like the pun? :chapeau ) ebay looking for items that rare. I mean they might be on ebay but not looking for things like that surely... That would be a stumble upon moment.
$15K for a lure? That's a bit mad... I've got some Erik Anton Berg chisels, maybe I should put them up with a BIN for $1K each :rofl2:
Nice pun, Andrew.
I swear, some of these sellers need a one time meeting with a guy named George Maledon. He was an a friend of Judge Isaac Parker.
This one is the icing on the cake!

Oh my....... Unbelievable! It's a huge razor and sure looks clean, but does anyone else think the heel looks way off? Almost like it was ground away and into the stabilizer..just looks ugly, to me. I would be at it with a Dremel the moment I got it. LOL (seriously, I would)
Not too long ago, there was a NOS W&B up on auction, went for about $850, maybe less. An absolute stunner, that one... This is nowhere close to it, I am not sure if you guys caught that one. Worth every penny, unlike this piece.
I cannot believe there is that much money being thrown at razors, must be a very very very serious (and cashed up) collector.
Not really. Butchers aren't really..... Models of consistency
Some people, usually new eBay users with low feedback, are throwing big money at the large bladed W&Br's & a few others these days.
I need to check with a friend of mine who is a member on the B&B forum & see if there are some guys showing off some big blades there.
Whoever it is, they're really screwing it up bad. I just looked & now that seller is hiding his buyer id's but I'd be willing to bet they are ones who post lots of consecutive bids trying to manipulate others to become discouraged from bidding but instead they're driving the prices way up because if someone wants it bad enough, it's going to sky rocket! It used to not be that way. This has really gotten out of control lately............
It does create a false value and market bubble so to speak. I really do hope people start doing homework before throwing money at stuff that isn't worth it. A lot of the razors posted on here are going for silly amounts even if they were in decent condition. But unfortunately, we are stuck with the situation. I do like the old razors because once cleaned up they really are great shavers but perhaps it's time to invest in a new one or a custom one (Tim has some really nice stuff) if the money permits. SWMBO can be convinced from time to time that I really need stuff ;)
Butchers over 8/8 in a meaningful way aren't the most common 1"+ sheffields at all. You will come across a gb, Rodgers, el and co, wostenholm at least before you see a butcher. Not greaves or marshes scarce but scarce enough given the popularity of the maker to create dumb prices.
I think this one went too high just in the sense that I personally don't consider a stabilizer model of a huge Sheffield anywhere near on the same level as a proper near wedge. There was a lot of brand factor going on there... Too much
The W&B FBU is a fine razor to be sure, but things have gotten a bit out of hand.
Remember the Chronik?
Kind of controversial.
A noted straight razor guy proclaimed his newly acquired, somewhat obscure "Chronik" straight to be the finest straight razor he'd ever shaved with, bar none, head and shoulders above all, like being kissed by angels. Suddenly they became the Flavor of the Week, and people were loosing their minds trying to find these and paying CRAZY amounts of money for the few that turned up.
Those who managed to find these after paying the super inflated prices suddenly said "Hey, these are nothing special...even kind of substandard craftsmanship for a Solingen straight, certainly no better than any other...what gives?". Many came to suspect "what gave" was clever marketing.
So some VERY knowledgeable folks conducted a pretty detailed analysis of these Chronik razors from some samples loaned for this purpose by some other folks who'd recently paid way too much for them as a result of the hype. They determined that what they had was basically a Solingen straight of questionable finishing quality.
The noted straight razor guy maintained his position that his was the Greatest Straight Razor on Earth (which it may well have been for whatever reason as a singular anomaly), and everybody else got stuck with lemons.
It became a bit of an embarrassment, and Chronik Fever died a quiet, ignoble death.
The point in my mentioning this, is that to get caught up in Flavor of the Week hype frequently results only in burning through cash muy pronto.
This being said, in the interest of full disclosure, I did just buy a W&B FBU :o.
I don't buy any razor until I hold it in my hand, I guess that leaves E-bay out, too many times the sellers on there will only show you one side of the blade.
