Exactly what Richard says, and also remember "if it's too good to be true it probably is".
But rolling the dice on eBay is fun, and while we've all gotten burned, I feel like I haven't lost money collectively. The important thing of course is to not pay full price, look and read carefully, ask questions, and try as best you can to know your seller.

I've been playing eBay on the low lower end getting my feet wet. Learning to look past what I want and to see what is there. One marginal buy has taught me a lot. Definitely part of the learning curve.
