@OP: why don't you use an auction sniper? I use Gixen, itis free. For 6 USD you buy their mirror service, which means they send your max bid from 2 computers simultaneously. It is useful if you really really really want an item. In once lost an item not having the mirror service due to Gixen having an issue with the free server.

Then, you are competing against those who do same. may as well buy the lottery.
Manual bid at last seconds will be the way to go. Always has been?

Whatever way you bid you are competing against those doing the same. I can only see advantages of a sniper. You simply enter your max bid and forget about it. And you don't waste time watching the last minutes of the bidding. You get a mail as soon as you win the item.
Moreover, you will not be tempted to raise your max bid last minute and end up buying something for more than you initially intended. Last minute frenzy made me do things I regretted later.

but everyone waits until the last two seconds to bid anyway, so its just trading one headache for another

There's a lot of excitement in those last seconds, when on a fast connection for sure.
And the last second overbid?? Oh that has been me,, hehehe. Will be again I am sure, could have been me yesterday on this puma were it not for my laggy connection.
Thanks for the tips on the snipe programs. Going to look into them a bit.
So much activity around here right now surfing the bay is a low luxury for the rest of the month.
Daughters moving back in, renovations carrying on, and a few nearly done razors are calling me despite my wife's honey-do lists..
Salute' and have an awesome weekend gents,

I believe there are still a lot of low information bidders who jack up prices leading up to the last few seconds....I am also not entirely sure there are not some shills on the occasional item to raise the price.
