Thanked: 23SWAGGING prices for a lot w/ a SR and brushes I bought :)
We all want to feel as if we get a good deal and sometimes we do..and sometimes we don't. I've ended up on both sides of that myself plenty of times.
I bid on, and won, this lot from an estate, and for funs sake let's see if it's a decent deal (note: the definition of 'deal' here is if I could get my money back (or more) if I flipped the items).
Cost: About $40
So there's seven things in the lot.
My own, quick estimates
1) The strop.
I really don't know if there's a market for old, used strops. It looks like it's in decent shape...but to be conservative I'll give it a value of $0.
2) The brushes
- one wooden handled one...I'll give that a $0 value as well,
- one Ever Ready that looks like it's in pretty good condition. Nice color and shape as well. Knot is a write-off so handle alone I guess. I say...$7.50
- one looks like a Made-Rite brush. The clear base is kinda neat. How about $6.50
So far I am not doing very well getting that 40 bucks back.
3) The safety razors
The Gillette actually looks really, really nice. Can't tell the writing on the top of the handle. Assuming that the top cap looks the same I'm gonna go out on a limb and say $15
The other one looks like a Schick E-type. Ok condition, could clean up, comes with an old injector case, maybe $7 on a good day.
That brings me to....$36
4) The straight razor
Pretty much the reason I bought the lot in the first place.
Love the German-Russian engraving and after some help it was discovered that it's a pre-1917 razor due to the Russian spelling.
How much pre-1917 I don't have a clear idea of yet.
It looks to be in decent shape.
This one I have a real hard time slapping a value on. Maybe $35.
So, assuming the above holds water I can probably get my money back if/when I sell. Maybe.
Appreciate any comment/corrections on my SWAG prices above

Nice haul. I saw that set on eBay but decided to pass on it as it didn't excite my passions (it takes a lot more nowadays). I usually look to what catches my fancy first and then consider the cost but I think that you do a disservice to the wood handle brush. Cleaned up, restored and a new knot it could fetch a handsome price plus be a nice addition to your brush collection that you will be starting soon, if you haven't already. If the strop isn't to dry rotted you can clean it and then rub it down with neatsfoot oil until it becomes supple again. Interesting razor, it would be nice to see what the history on it is.

My guess is that with a little time and elbow grease on the strop and razor, along with new knots for the brushes, (if they even need them), you scored. By the looks of things, my gut feeling tells me you did very, very well!
Enjoy the project!

Thanked: 433My everyday strop in probably 80-100 years old. If yours isn't cut or has crinkles/wrinkles it should freshen up really well with a small amount of Neatsfoot oil

Thanked: 23Thanks, I'll be sure to check out the strop in more detail when it gets here. Would be really neat to have a second strop actually.
I might be able to find a brand somewhere on it as well.

No estimates given nor allowed here~
Looks like a good haul! Check the Schick as to whether the spring under the blade can be slid to one side. If it can they are really nice as you are able to clean them thoroughly. They decided they were selling blades, and so, that feature went away till some the later Hydro-magics of the 70's and then only for a few months.
Don't sell any of the brushes short! Shampoo, rinse and hair condition them before you use them.
