Losing by one dollar!!!!
One thing I have come to hate is losing an auction by one dollar! This one specific situation annoyed me enough to the point of feeling the need of sharing... So there were 3 razors up two boker king kutters and this amazing George wostenholm I've never seen before... So I was only after that razor, bidding was only on $52 dollars and I figured it was because he first picture was of the broken king kutter... So 15 seconds left in the auction I throw $70 dollars on it... I'm the highest bidder! Then all of a sudden boom, OUTBID by one dollar... By then it was too late for me to respond appropriately... I was so stoked for this razor I even had my wife sitting next to me in anticipation, she told me to bid $75 instead and I didn't listen which is even more reason of me kicking myself... She was even mad, I had to tell her there will be other oppertunites (even though in the back of my mind I was screaming) well here she is with all her glory, I hope the new owner takes good care of her as I would have...

Thanked: 3225Likely if you threw in the $75 but with 15 seconds to go you still might have been out bid by a dollar. Sniping programs are very quick.

WOW! did I just learn something. This explains a few things. TY
"Auction sniping is the practice, in a timed online auction, of placing a bid likely to exceed the current highest bid (which may be hidden) as late as possible—usually seconds before the end of the auction—giving other bidders no time to outbid the sniper. This can be done manually, by software on the bidder's computer, or by an online sniping service. Use of an online service is said to decrease the failure rate of the snipe, because the website has more reliable servers and a faster Internet connection with a less variable delay in sending data (jitter), allowing the bid to be placed closer to the deadline, even arriving within the last second."

You can just do it yourself, just bid in the last 5 seconds or so, 3 is better but a slow connection will get you. And yes the chances are whoever outbid you could have had $100 (or $71) on the item.
Just put in what you are prepared to spend and see what happens.Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

As edhewitt said, the winner may have bid much more than what he won by, but ebay will only take the one dollar over needed to put him ahead of the next highest bid when using automatic bidding.

I have bid upwards of $300 for a razor and won it for $50ish. Ebay takes the next highest bid by whatever denomination. The highest bid wasn't anywhere near what I was willing to pay so I lucked out.
But I too have lost by $1. I just bid the MAX amount I want to pay in the last couple seconds of the auction, if I win...great. ..if not it wasn't meant to be.
