Thanked: 22It's crazy watching what some of the W&B choppers go for on the Bay!! As a SR newbie what I'm much more interested in learning about are the "sleeper" Sheffield brands which provide a top notch shave for less as they are off the fanboy radar!

Thanked: 13249Perhaps you should go buy a sense of humor
Try E-bay Maybe UK ebay
some of you new guys just have to accept the simple fact you are late to the party
Huge W&B's, Filli's, DD, Henckels, Escher's, Nakayama, Coticules, etc: etc: all used to be much cheaper..
Never paid more then $30 for a W&B but then again SRP used to have 2800 members when I joined it, and it was about the only SR forum on the internetTimes have changed the amount of people chasing the razors have grown but tens of thousands sooooooo the prices went up... Wow doesn't exactly take a economic genius to figure that out

Thanked: 3215It’s all Wolfpack34’s fault…
Every time he post one if his gorgeous Sheffield restores, half the guys go straight to EBay and place a bid…
Really it is all our faults, we keep talking about them and drive the price up…
But Mike is still the ring leader…

Simple as that. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Long before the internet I wanted a Colt New Frontier 44spl with a 7&1/2" bbl. I had read a lot of Elmer Keith and was a 44 nut. I paid what may have been 'stupid money' for a minty copy.
I've not shot it half a dozen times in the past 20 years, and I could get more for it than I paid, but I just love having the thing and won't sell it. It ain't eating anything.
Sort of the same with the big meat chopper Sheffields and the other obscure objects of desire. I sold my big FBUs BTW.
The thrill was gone.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

You mean bought them all.....
I haven't purchased any W&B's for quite awhile now, I've been gorming other pastures lately.
Fact is for me, when I started, I didn't know W&B from TI, all I knew was that I liked them, was drawn to them, and that was what I wanted to shave with - simple as that, all YMMV.
I like what Glen said about how much less expensive they were, in the day, I'm certainly not an old timer here, but they are going for considerably more than I when I was grabbing them, and they are still my favorite razor, I love shaving with them.
When I started it was the Ducks, there was warfare when they came up for auction, now not so much, and most likely in another six months or so, the W&B's will fall out of fashion, and a new trend will replace them, it's all in cycles it seems. The one factor that won't change though is they don't make most of the vintage razors we court here, and as the supply lessens, demand will increase.

I had a triplelock target 44spl circa 1910. Sold it long ago. Also a Colt New Service Target 44spl with Roper grips. Beautiful pieces both of 'em. I bought a copy of Sixguns by Elmer Keith for $10.00 when I was about 20 years old. That book cost me thousands before all was said and done ....... but it was fun .......

Thanked: 56I wonder if some if the trend for particular brands comes because the low price provides a good entry point. Then people suggest it because of that low price, and it gets repeated over and over. This builds hype and demand, and the price goes up.
Another factor may be that WB is a safe bet. A lot of people mention "lesser known Sheffields" without naming names. If a stamp of Sheffield is all it takes to indicate quality, that's fine, but if there are some brands to avoid, nobody wants to gamble.
So maybe start talking up other Sheffield brands to dilute the WB focus, and prices may return to a reasonable level.

Thanked: 3215Yup, remember Keith from the Guns & Ammo and American Rifleman days, and his stories on the Border. Those were different times.
He probably sold, a lot of pistols…
