Thread: A tale of whoa

So today I log into my eBay account to change my mailing address, and HOLY COW WHO BOUGHT A PUMA FOR $71 WITH MY ACCOUNT?

I remembered setting a snipe bid last week, so I went over to Gixen... I had set my snipe for 35. I thought that meant $35, but in this case the auction was in British pounds, not dollars. Would have been nice for Gixen to mention that, but it's free, so I guess I can't complain too loudly.

Curse you Brits and your unfavorable exchange rate...

Anyway, it's not a bad razor. Did I do OK for the price?

Looks great to me! Considering what Pumas have been known to go for, I'd say you made a super deal! Want me to take it off your hands?

Both the razor and box look to be in very good condition, and as Jim pointed out Pumas can go for quite a lot. Looks like it's quite literally "a steal at twice the price" in action. But then I am a newbie, so I could be wrong, but it's looking nice to me.


Edit: My eyes skipped over the first image (and all of the text). Split scales at the pivot pin, that's a shame, overall it's still looking very nice though.

Hmmm. Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't look that closely at the photos, since I was only going to bid $35. Dang.

Oh, well. Maybe this will be my second rescaling project.

I told you Josh that you had gotten a good deal even if you really didn't want it.

Keep it and rescale it like you said, then you can sell it for mad cash .

Pumas are extremely good shavers. I don't know where Lynn would rate them, but mine is my go to blade. You got a good deal.

The Puma arrived today, and overall I'm happy. The crack that I didn't pay attention to goes right through both scales at the pin--they're shot.

The blade is nice, though. The hone wear is less severe than appeared in the photos, because the spine seems to have had a flat area on it from the factory. It has a very slight frown, which will be no match for my DMT.

No rust or pitting. We'll see if I keep this one. It might appear in the BST forum with a custom set of hardwood scales.... We'll see.

The case is awesome, though. It's hardwood and solid as can be. That I'm definitely keeping.

I would guess, just from general antiques experience, that a wooden case in good to excellent shape could alone go for $50-$60. Add to that the razor that it goes with (a no name razor to start) and you are near $100. Now, make the razor a Puma in good to very good condition....cha-ching! Shame about the scales. In other realms of collectibles and antiques, changing damaged parts or refurbishing detracts from the value...I am guessing that does not apply to razors, as they are tools.

I'm not a good judge of antiques, but the case appears to be in excellent condition. It's 100 percent sound. I scrubbed it a bit with a toothbrush to clean off some crud, and wow, very nice. I think it needs a light oiling; the wood seemed a little dry.

The trashed scales would no doubt detract from the razor's value elsewhere, but on SRP a custom set of scales has value. I'm hoping to take my time and make something really nice... I have some blanks in a nice light wood with dark stripes through the grain. The light wood will echo the light-colored scales it came with, and they'll look snazzy with the dark brown case...
