Great deal , almost
I thought I got a great deal on a Wostenholm IXL 6/8+ , meat chopper wedge w/barber notch , and the original coffin shaped , black box . The razor , and box looked to be in pretty good condition , and I got it for $15.50 which I thought was a hell of a good deal . The razor arrived today , and when I took it out of the box I was greeted with the unmistakable , noxious smell of the celluloid scales gassing
. I immediately removed the scales , and threw them in the trash . The blade is in fairly good condition , with most of the original mirror finish with some minor honing scratches , but does have some very minor pitting on the blade , and the top of the spine . Looks like I have another restoration to do
. I still think I got a good deal , I think the blade and box are worth more than the $15.50 I paid (at least to me , they are)
.

Thanked: 3795I realize that this is a long shot, but can you describe the smell? Can you equate it to any other odor? Obviously, I am asking because I don't know what out-gassing scales smell like.
Maybe we could have a sticky that includes a scratch and sniff attachment!

I think I have similar scales, and the smell increases if they get wet. They seem to fade in color where the smell comes from also. Oh, and 6/8ths + for $15, that's a steal for a meat chopper!

I would describe the smell as acidic . It stinks , and will "hang" in your nose for awhile . If your old celluloid scales stink , they are gassing . The gas is corrosive , and will cause other celluloid scales it comes into conact with to start gassing ,too . It's bad stuff
!
