Finally got a big Butcher
I guess this one musta been off the radar, seems "straight" was not in the item title. I know the picture isn't great, but I think I got it for a pretty good price.
What are your thoughts?

Thanked: 2209The stubby tang says it is an old razor, probably prior to 1890.
Not to much on the hone wear and the edge looks to be free of rust.
It should clean up very nice and shave very smoothly!

Looks like a fun project to me, and I think you did pretty well on the price based on my recent WB acquisition. I paid $30 more for virtually the same razor without the hone wear. Looks to me like yours will clean up just as nice in the end.

I looked at that to.Are you rescaling it? The crack in the scales made me not bid on it, The blade looks good tough.

Thanked: 95I think you got a good deal.
The scales look good, no visible bugbites, and the crack in the scale are easely fixed with some CA, but as always with ebay, you never know for sure before you get the razor.
Hopefully it'll clean up well!

I am a fan of the fat tangs and the stubby tails!
I might rescale, but I really do like the black horn look. I really would rather go with epoxy if possible.
I noticed the hone wear on the spine, and the main reason it didn't bother me is that the blade looks to be a really heavy grind. The toe has been muted, but other than that, I'd actually say the hone wear looks pretty minimal.
Thanks for the feedback everyone; I'll be sure to post pics when I get her.

Nice steal Holli! If you want to try fixing the scales bring it along the next time you come over. You can also use the dremel to buff the blade if you like. My shop isn't heated so it will probably be too cold to do much in there.

Looks a lot older than 1890's to me. It's a nice, big, old razor, but I don't think I would bid much for it because of the wear and tear the blade has been through, especially near the toe end. Still a good looking one to me though, the shape of the tang reminds me of the older pre celluloid era blades

Thanks for the offer Joe. I'll have to wait and see what I'll want to do with regards to cleaning, but I'm thinking some sort of epoxy repair on the scales would be a good idea. Is that something you could help me out with?
Thanks for the info on the date. I had a feeling it was older too, so I'm happy to have my suspicion supported.
