Now that I can tell ya about I have one of those old Friodurs too in 11/16 I have honed quite a few of these large ones and it takes some doing to get them near as smooth as the older smaller ones...

Glen and or Max or anyone

Quik question is it tougher/harder steel more microchip prone or just a more coarse steel. Or all of the above!

I have found the Friodour's to be very difficult to hone, but great shavers once they are ready. If you get them keen, you will be rewarded with a unique shave. Solid resistance, yet a very good cut.

My big beast of a 8/8 in black micarta (from Shaving Shop) is sweet and I had no problems honing it, in fact it was the first razor I ever honed (Shaptons) Life long experience trough knife sharpening though.

Partly what Larry said. The several I had did microchip. Others didn't. Basically I had to find he right combination for that particular Friodur. The ones from the Shavingshop were easy honers. The ones from the Polish seller on Ebay hell. But once you hit that sweet spot... divine. I heard and read that many had the same issue. I have no clue why the difference for the same razor. Different batches for sure and why some honed up so great wthout headache is still a mystery to me. Maybe the G man or Lynn have a answer to tne riddle as both have honed their share of steel too.

Amund, hope you recover fast from your urethra/kidnet stone treatment. Never fun, neither is the prostate check..
But a kidney stone must be removed.

I have 5/8 Old Friodur and was a mother too until I figured out the right combo. But it has always been a sticky smooth A+ shaver.
