Thread: Ebay find.

Being new to SR's I have been browsing Ebay like a mad man and have come across what I think is a truly rare razor. A NOS Filarmonica with all original packaging.

I think for the last year there have been a few of them every week, so I wouldn't call it 'rare'.

It never ceases to amaze me how the razor market develops. These razors have been around, in abundance, for many years. Only after some very favourable reviews have they come into fashion. Seems like Filarmonicas have taken the place of W&B meat choppers, both in terms of price, and level of hype.

Don't get me wrong, that is a very nice razor, but it certainly is not rare, not even in mint condition. Still very nice though, if you like the scale design.

Yeah and the ones with the rubber over the tang are later production if I am not mistaken. I don't know if that means anything but the vintage lightly used pieces I have are all tang stamped without the rubber and are real good shavers. Glad I got 'em before the Filly bubble came to be.

Besides the rubber tang thingy, one other difference seems to be the EPBD label. From what others have written, it sounds like the EPBD either refers to the grind OR the tempering process OR the steel OR pure marketing b.s. Take your pick.

Personally, I'd love to try a #14 sometime just to see how it compares to some of the workhorse blades that I use (including a #13), but I agree that we seem to be in a Filly #14 bubble, so I'm just sticking to the more down-to-earth brands for now.

Still, it is good to see that there are enough people interested in SR shaving to keep prices for these razors going up (even if they are unjustified). In the larger sense, it means that companies like Hart Steel and others can make an actual profit selling straight razors to people switching to this way of shaving, which is to everyone's benefit here, I think.

I wasn't looking to buy the Filly, came across it while searching for different styles that appealed to me and putting them into the "watch list" to get an idea of prices that they are selling for and cross referencing them with listed brands here in the beginners guide, so as to stay away from the cheapo and garbage brands.
