    Default antique mall

My wife and I like to go around to thrift shops and the like. We stopped in this huge antique store today. I looked around for shaving gear and found a lot of razors, a couple of brushes and 1 stone.

There were only 2 razors that were worth mentioning. One was a "dubl duck" Case razor. I didn't get it out of the case to look at because the blade had some serious wear it it. If you could imagine looking at the blade horizontally it looked like a half moon was cut into it. The tag said $75 and the lady said the owner wasn't there to talk about. The other mentionable was a "Phoenix" and what makes it mentionable was that the back of the blade said MADE IN SOLINGEN. They were asking $29 for it. That blade had some age on it but it didn't look like it had any nicks or chips.

Those brushes I didn't care about.

The "stone" was very interesting as it was wood and looked very old. It looked like a large case with a block of wood wedged inside. I couldn't take the block out of the case so I don't know if there actually was a stone on the other side or if the wood had been used for honing. The block inside the case was very very smooth. They had it marked "vintage wet stone" but no price.

    Thoughts?

Well, for that Duck, I sure wouldn't pay $75 for it...even less since it sounds like it had a frown. Many antique dealers just don't get it. As for the Phoenix, I've not used one, but $29 is reasonable for a blade in acceptable condition. In my neck of the woods, most repairable blades run in the $25-$30 range.

The doubleduck in its condition, don't bother with it. The other razor sounds like it could be of interest if it can be polished up with the basics and honed.

SRP classifieds is usually the best place to go to get value for your money.

What about that wooden "stone"? No idea what they wanted for it.

    Default vintage stone

That "vintage stone" could end up being the real prize--- pictures, pictures, pictures.

Dubl Duck and Case are two separate companies - there is, as far as I know, no Dubl Duck Case.

The stone could be lots of things; there are all sorts of hones that can be found in wood boxes. You'd need to post pics, and even then it can be hard to tell, especially if the stone is covered in crud.

Well, we went back to the antique mall to take pictures of the stone but did not bring the camera or cell phones. Great ain't it?

Anyway, there is another razor called a "diamond steel". It says DIAMOND STEEL on the one side and on the back it says "Intern***** Cutlery Company Solingen, Germany". Part of the scales look like they got hot and started to burn. They're asking $24 for that razor.

EDIT: I also wanted to mention that we went to another antique store and only found 1 razor. A WR Morly and Sons Clover Leaf or something similar to that name. It was $15. I did a search of the forums and wiki and couldn't find the Diamond Steel razor but I did find the Clover Leaf, so tomorrow I will be going back out to get pictures of that stone and purchase that Clover razor.

I agree, some just don't get it. I had a similar experience at an antique mall. They were selling all of there straights for $95cdn each. So the WB barbers use 1"+ and dubl duck wonderedge was the same price as the cracked Torrey or Boker with no scales. Of course the owner wasn't there to negotiate(maybe that's a common excuse not to lower prices) but I managed to get the WB for $45 or something because the box was missing.
