    Default Double Duck Restore

I was looking at Ebay which many members here seem to do. Anyway this one looked really pretty but the blade looked like it had a smile.
Can a smile be repaired and if the blade was resotred should the smile hve already been removed? (smile=arch in the cutting edge of the blade, I don't know what else to call it). Can you really tell blade condition from pictures?
Also, I am willing to pay for a nice DD, but would it no be smarter to buy it from someone on the SRP?

That one looks to have a decent smile and some toe-heavy honewear, but it probably still has lots of life left in it.

As far as removing the smile - I wouldn't bother if it was mine. In order to remove the smile, you'd have to remove metal from the heel end, and I'd rather leave as much as possible. Frowns are really what you want to look at repairing. Smiles are actually a good thing, IMO.

Did you win this one? I think the seller is very well regarded, though I've never personally dealt with him.

I am not the winner of that razor. I was watching it and really liked the way it looked but am new to this. I thought I'd wait until I have a better understanding of razors in general. If I were to spend that kind of money on a razor I would prefer to purchase it from a member of SRP or be able to see the razor in person.

I've looked at the pics , and I don't see any smile or frown . It has some hone-wear , but the hone-wear looks pretty even . Ideally , the edge of the blade should parallel the profile of the spine . Hope you won it . The seller has an outstanding reputation . I have 3 razors from him , and they all were truly "shave ready" and immaculately clean .

That would be wise. I would not think this would be a great purchase for your first razor - the Wonderedges are really collector items, and though reportedly great shavers (I don't have mine yet), carry a special mystique and pricetag to match. You would be far better off buying an inexpensive, but high quality shave-ready razor from the Classifieds here, IMO.

Don't worry . IMHO "ducks" are over rated , and over priced . But , if you want a duck you have to pay the price . The seller , Altima55 is the real deal , and you can buy with confidence from him . You can get other razors from him for alot less than what that duck went for .

Sorry, but I have to disagree. It looks to me like the honewear is toe-heavy, and the bevel at the point seems to 'smile' a bit. Though maybe not a true smile - it could be a half smile, or smirk - or the light playing tricks on my eyes!

This is absolutely not meant to impugn the restorer - I'm sure this was as he found it, and as I've said, he has a very good reputation and has done a great job restoring this razor. I would be willing to bet its an awesome shaver still!

The fact that this razor has been honed into the stabilizer leads me to believe that some blade width has been removed through honing as well, which is consistent with the hone wear. Possibly a small chip or just heavy use over time.

Not worth the price in my book, but, what can i say I've never spent over $35 on a razor.

I'd much rather have this one!

Ridiculously overpriced. You can get new vintage Solingen razors for a lot less with a vendor warranty from Home.
