I do not understand what was so attractive in this lot of hones.....
OLD USED TOOLS PLANES CHISELS SHARPENING STONES GROUP - eBay (item 280504170310 end time May-13-10 15:56:40 PDT)
Any ideas?
Is it possible that the center stone is a Japanese natural????? If so it looks to be a very coarse grit.Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

Is that a big coti? What are the other two on the left? I'm terrible at hone ID.

wow, some serious bidding on that hone assortment. I don't see a worthwhile razor hone in the bunch. I have won boxes of similar lots that all turned out to be carborundum, norton, washita, etc, but very few that contained Eschers, Thuringians, or coticules. But there were two lots that did.........eBay is a gamble, but I am not watching or bidding on that particular lot. Maybe Sham or Jimmy can ID a possibility in that bunch, but I sure can't. Then, what do I know, anyway!

Thanked: 124I'd agree with Mainman. I think they're hoping for a coti and/or a Thurigan(sp?). Especially a coticule, I'd bet.

Thanked: 2209Both Sham and me thought the hone on the left looked to be the finest grit but most likely a hard Arkansas stone. The center one has a size that resembles the coarse grit Japanese naturals and are worth $40 new at most.
Oh well, I won the "Salmen" and a "Charnley Forest" this week so I am happy.Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

Randy, that middle stone has a layered "strata" look to it, which the really coarse Japanese natural stones I've seen tend not to have. I have a couple of awasedo that do have that layered look, though. The corners and sides are rough, but not that top, at all.

It does look like a Coticule imo. Pinkish yellow collor, blue spots and curly lines and layered. I have a Coticule with 1 line like that at the side which is 2cm thick. I don't know if a Coticule can be 3 cm (1 1/4") thick, that seems to be the only feature that would speak against it being a Coticule.
