I snipe in the last 4 seconds or so with my max bid. The + on this is that I'm not encouraged to bid more whereas if I were to bid earlier and wasn't highest I'd be inclined to break my resolution and go for more. The 4 second thing leaves me winning or losing with no time to send in another bid.
This is pretty much exactly what I do, except I usually place my final highest big about 1 hour before the auction ends. I never go back on my "highest bid."

99% of the time I've done that I get sniped in the last few seconds. I decided to stop being the guy who lost by one bid increment. I still lose some doing it my way but I was winning more than I lost.

TBH I quit bidding on ebay some months ago. Every now and then I still might but if someone doesn't link to it in a thread on SRP I won't see it. I don't search ebay anymore and guess what, once the withdrawal symptoms were gone, I don't miss it at all.

When I started bidding on ebay, I was so annoyed at how I kept losing auctions. I have bid 3 seconds before an auction ends, but I hate the uncertainty! I have been using Gixen.com and I love it. You enter in an item number and your max bid and it will bid 3 seconds before the auction ends for you. Either way, if you bid seconds before the auction ends, you have the best chances of winning it, I'm just too laz.. err.. busy to have to do it manually.

My primary reason for using it is that many auctions end at very inconvenient times. I suppose I could bid early, but then I'd only contribute to bidding frenzy so I don't do that.
