Default Yet Another Warning About eBay Vendors

Occasionally I read threads by new members who describe an eBay purchase and how the basis of their trust for the vendor was due to the description given of the honing process.

    PLEASE DON'T FALL FOR THIS.

Just because someone can spout off a long list of hones, pastes, and strops does not mean that they know how to use them. I have dealt with the aftermath of some of these honing fiascos and I can assure you that the ability to describe honing does not translate to a good shave. One ebay vendor who is increasingly being recommended for an item he sells has dramatically demonstrated himself to be an example of this. It is pointless to highly polish the face of a bevel that is not set, but this is what he does.

Be careful who you trust on eBay, and please realize that the term "shave ready" is meaningless to these vendors.

that's an old trick on ebay, been happening over the last 2 years or so and i've seen the edges of those people.
so to me it's actually a warning sign.

I've seen them too and it's not limited to EBay but they are the worst/most frequent offenders.

Would it be wrong to list the offender's ebay handle so that potential buyers can steer clear?

Yes. It is my understanding that, no matter their transgressions, it is against SRP policy to disparage vendors, including eBay vendors.

Makes sense, and I can respect that. I will steer clear of the shave ready claims on ebay. I appreciate the information. These things make it bad for reputable persons to sell their items there.

Well, keep in mind that some claims of shave readiness are valid. You just need to be able to know which ones they are!

I've also noticed that a lot of eBay vendors seem to have gotten buffers recently.

Buy buffed blades at your own risk... Shiny isn't always good.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.
