Wonder where they're made. That camel bone looks a might bit purty.

Those camel scales indeed are nice, but I still have doubts about all these damascus razors on eBay. Will be interested to see if the seller contacts Glen and hear the follow up as to whether this will take an edge.

Thanked: 13249Answered Honestly:
Dear gssixgun,
I did not make these myself. Yes they are handmade in Pakistan. They are very beautiful and very well made. If you would like to see one up close let me know and I can make arrangements to meet you. Sorry, I have never shaved with one of these.

Thanked: 993Hmmmm.....i'd like to know more about this. More for informations sake than me actually purchasing one. I don't think I'd shell out $102 for a test......but if there is a way around that, sure.

If you test them out and they're junk you'll at least end up with decent looking scales for something. Or maybe they'll turn out like the GD razors where some can actually be honed...

Thinking back to my Ebay/Damascus experience - The ad was written and things were worded like the seller actually made the razors, but I'm not sure that is the case. That seems to be a common trend with these. Also, the scales, though they were horn, were rather low quality and had imperfections in them that made it such that I wouldn't want to reuse the scales. Furthermore, the razor had a straight tang and, you guessed it, a straight spacer - so the amount of re-working that would have been necessary to use the scales on a razor made it not worth my time. Also, the scales were big and thick and awkward.
In short, I think the trend of "cheap/crappy razors have cheap/crappy scales" is likely to apply to ones like these, even if the base materials may seem nicer.
But that's just based on my sample size of 1, so enjoy loads of salt with those two cents.

What really puzzles me about these damascus razors that pop up is that there seems to be a decent amount of file work done on them and the like.
Is it just improper heat treat that is keeping these things from not being able to take an edge? I'm not implying that these particular ones won't, but in general it seems to avoid pakistan razors like the plague is good advice.
Just curious why they go through so much trouble to use materials like camel bone and the like for scales, do file work on the razors and then, presumably to me, do an improper heat treat. If they are able to consistently produce razors that can take an edge, it would seem worth their while as those would likely sell for more.
I don't know - just my 2 cents.

Do not be fooled. The Pakistanis are getting better at imitating razors.

With cheap labor why not make them look good.
I think most of the issues are with the raw materials. Cheap steel makes cheap razor.
I'm sure they think that no one actually plans on using one. Probably because most people don't.
If you ask Bud K what their most sold out item is they will likely say "straight razor knives" I was told this by one of their representatives who said that many times they don't include certain models on their catalogs because most times they are sold out before the catalogs are delivered.
I'm curious about these razors, but don't care enough to risk it. I also wouldn't expect anyone else to bother.
Despite Glen's personality I don't know that this person would loan a razor to be honed. Then again, it is Glen.
