    Default wadeandbutcher ebay buy

Hi, I am a newbie to straightrazor shaving and have just bought this wade and butcher. handle broken and blade blunt. no obvious chips out of the blade. can anybody recommend a company that can restore/ replace the handle? and sharpen/ hone the blade. i am based in the uk. also any ideas on price too would be nice.

    i paid £28 or £18

do you think the razor is restorable and worth restoring?

    thanks

    A picture sure would help...

Neil Miller is da man to talk to in the UK. www.strop-shop.co.uk - hand made straight razor strops, razor pouches, shaving accessories, vintage razors, razor honing and restoration

A full restore and rescaling will cost you though, you would come out cheaper if you bought a brand new Dovo and had it honed.

I am from Sheffield and although this may sound daft I guess I have an affinity to blades made in my home town so would like a good vintage Sheffield blade. are W and B as good as anything out there? I would like to restore this one if it is possible.

    Ah I understand.

Wade and Butchers are very well regarded, so it's well worth getting restored. A polished W&B with some shiny dark horn scales is a thing of beauty, check out these restores done to very similar blades:

Welcome to SRP. Your razor is in decent shape as far as the blade goes. Too bad the scales are broken. W&B are as good as they get when it comes to vintage Sheffield razors. If it were mine I would have it rescaled but I wouldn't go for big $ to do it if I had alternatives. It will make a fine shaver but I wouldn't care to spend what it would take to make it a showpiece. YMMV. Check out the razor clubs forum for more Sheffield as well as others.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    thanks, they look very nice.
the bottom one looks very similar to mine, and i would like to restore it to look like that if possible.
is there any way of finding out what year it was made approximately? it was a buy in the dark moment on ebay tbh, and i quite simply went with my gut that it looked "worthy" of restoring. I always knew Sheffield was known for it's steel as alot of my ancestors have been employed in the steel industry, but didnt know it was for razors too. :-) its my duty to restore it.

thanks jimmy i will do that. i bought a new thiers issard about a month ago, and although i am no razor expert, it doesnt seem sharp to me. followed stropping instructions etc but it has never really seemed sharp as i am making 3/4 passes in the same direction to get the same effect as from my mach 3, but fed up of buying them.

If your W&B doesn't say England on it, it's made before 1891.

I guess you bought a TI with a factory edge, and they generally needs to be honed to shaving sharp, stropping isn't enough.

on the face of the blade it is very feint/ worn writing but it says EXTRA with what looks like 2 swords at either side of the writing. underneath that it says "HOLLOW GROUND RAZOR" and on the "neck"? it says "manufactured by wade and butcher sheffield" with what looks like a picture of a cross...similar to the crosses painted on the side of german bombers in WW2. :-)

i have just emailed the strop shop for some prices/ advice. if anybody knows of any other companies that are the best at what they do then please let me know.

thanks all. the day of paying £15 a month for mach 3 blades is coming to an end.

Yeah, now you can welcome spending hundreds every month on straight razor gear instead!

I do see what all the fuss is about with straight razor shaving actually, even after shaving with the unhoned TI, but I really like this WandB vintage thing as it was made 2 miles down the road from me over a hundred years ago.

is there any way you can find the rough year of manufacture from the markings? i will stop asking questions soon, i promise ;-)
