you need a very high carbon content in a razor steel, much higher than is good for knives. This is why razors are so prone to chipping and cracking. So the high carbon content in s60v is a *good* thing....

I understand the need for the carbon content for a high quality steel, but the vanadium content is pretty significant for this steel too. I suppose the CPM technology improves S60V's ability to take a fine edge though. I will say that once you achieve that fine edge, it should stay there for a long while too.

I'd still like to hear why Robert chose S60V as opposed to 154CM or S30V, if only for my own academic discussion.

I'm thinking about S60V because of the high carbon content, extreme wear resistance and vanadium content. It takes an incredible edge and holds it extremly well even at lower hardnesses like 57 to 59 HRC. I suspect a razor of S60V would have better edge-holding qualities at 60 HRC than straight high carbon steel would at 62 HRC. Puma razors are around 62 HRC and they've been about as good a razor as anyone could want.

I've had knives in S60V and it takes one mean mutha' of an edge, so I thought it would be worth experimenting with. Besides, it's readily available, though pricey - and highly stain/rust resistant. So that's why I've been thinking about S60V as opposed to 154cm, ATS-34, 440C, etc.

    Robert,

Thanks for posting your thoughts on steel choice. I look forward to seeing the results here in the forums, and getting your impressions of this steel for razor use!
