I am by no means knowledgeable, but it seems that the coticules I have seen look more "dense" (and of course on slate or BBW backer) this almost looks like sandstone.... any ideas? am I off my rocker?

I don't think that it is. OTOH, a member who lived near the mine said that there are pieces laying around the surrounding area from way back. I'm sure the mine would gather anything that was salable down to slurry stone size nowadays.

It'd be fun to pick up all those small little pieces and pulverize them into a fine powder to use for slurry
