Courtyard inside the Palais des Papes.

I just got back to our place in Nice, from a weekend trip to Avignon, to check out what remains of the French papacy. It's late, I'm tired, and just need a quick shave.

    Klar Seifen Shave Soap
    TOBS Badger Brush
    Edwin Jagger DE89L + Feather (4)
    Aveda Men AS Balm

A pretty good shave, I gave myself a couple of weepers, but it is an overall BBS. Night All.

    Shave #185.3 - Stropless

    Eze-Village.

Was planning a straight razor shave, but I didn't have any newspaper to strop the razor on, so I put a fresh blade in the DE and went for it.

    Klar Seifen Shave Soap
    TOBS Badger Brush
    Edwin Jagger DE89L + Feather (1)
    Aveda Men AS Balm
    Galimard Double Zero Cologne

BBS, except a small spot under my chin that I missed.

My trip is drawing to an end, so I may need to use up this blade before I begin flying in a few days. We will see, but it is possible that my shaves might be a little light on straight razor content for a few days.

The beaches on the Mediterranean are very picturesque, but they're definitely not noted for their talcum powder like sand.

I'll be flying to Paris tomorrow evening, where I'll have a layover before continuing to Taipei, so I'm just looking to use up my current Feather blade before I'm forced to trash it.

    Shave #185.6 - Jet Lag?

Jet lag and general malaise have kept me from shaving for a few days, and kept me away from the straight razors today (good thing).

    QCS Vostok
    Semogue 2012
    Edwin Jagger DE89L + Personna Precision (1)
    Captain's Choice Bay Rum
C&E West Indian Lime AS Balm

I did something wrong today. Either my prep was bad or I did a poor job of lathering. Today the Vostok lacked slickness, actually it was downright sticky. I've never had any real slickness problems with this soap before. I'm not entirely sure what went wrong. Anyway, I don't have any irritation, thankfully, but I'm only DFS-ish.

Now it is time to try to sleep.

Thank you MisterMoo and neehooya, glad you've been enjoying it. I originally thought this journal might end up going on hiatus while I was in France, but including some straight razors in my travel pouch didn't take up much space, allowed me to continue journaling, and worked pretty well. My ERN picked up a few water spots, the WISS probably did too, but who can tell. Other than that, they were fine for traveling, my newspaper strop kept them going, so in the future during long trips I might be more secure just taking a straight or two.

    Shave #185.7 - Revisiting .6

Well, Taiwan is getting smashed by Typhoon Soudelor, the biggest cyclone of 2015.

Typhoon Soudelor this morning. I've been through many Typhoons, but this one has been pretty spectacular. I'm not sure the violence really comes across in the photo.

My front yard. I can't really imagine how the wind managed to knock this down.

I've been very lazy about shaving since returning from France, a combination of jet lag and lack of drive. But, today I'm basically locked in the house, so I thought I'd try my last shave again. I wasn't very pleased with how it went. Today was better,...

    QCS Vostok
    TOBS Badger Brush
    Edwin Jagger DE89L + Personna Precision (2)
    Hulk's Smash

...but not perfect. The lather off the Vostok was better today. I remember now that it seems to prefer my badger brush. I got a decent 3-passer, but the soap was still not as slick as I like during the extra cleanup pass on my neck. Hmmm. Not sure what to think.

Anyway, the results today were good, an overall BBS, with one DFS spot on the jawbone near my right ear. I usually smooth out this area during my final half pass, so lack of slickness is the likely culprit.

Shave #185.8 - Shaving with Mud

We're still dealing with the aftermath of Typhoon Soudelor...

    Attachment 208839

Taipei has several hundred kilometers of bike trails along the city's riverbanks. I make extensive use of them for bicycling, both for exercise and commuting. Seems I won't be doing that for awhile.

    Attachment 208840

This is the post-typhoon water quality. I may have an idea why my lathers have been substandard lately. The water is basically mud.

    Synergy Lime Shave Soap
    TOBS Badger Brush
    Edwin Jagger DE89L + Personna Precision (3)
    Captain's Choice Bay Rum
C&E West Indian Lime AS Balm

I might be DE shaving for a little while. Our post-typhoon water quality is pretty bad, and it is definitely not helping my lathers. Today I gave the Synergy a whirl, and it did admirably considering what it had to deal with. The lather didn't really bloom up and develop as much cushion as normal, but it did lather a bit and the slickness was okay. However, if I'm going to be shaving with a subpar lather, I'd prefer to use the DE.

I did my normal shave routine and I'm BBS.

    Shave #185.9 - Last One?

Our water doesn't look like mud anymore. I think that it is still high in particulates and it is affecting lather quality, but I am getting at least a reasonable lather out of the Synergy soap.

    Castle Forbes Pre-Shave
    Synergy Lime Shave Soap
    Edwin Jagger DE89L + Feather (1)
    Hulk's Smash
    Gentlemen's Tonic AS Balm

I've been DE shaving for quite awhile now, I'm hoping to be able to pull my DOVO out for the next shave. I think the water and lather qualities are returning to acceptable levels.

    Today I'm BBS.
